지난 월요일에 DMV에 가서 운전면허 갱신 (주소 변경과 2월에 만료된 면허증 복구) 신청을 했는데 - 이튿날 '우편으로 부쳤다'는 메시지가 왔고, 오늘 (금요일) 우편함에 새 면허증이 도착했다.
새 면허증은 Real ID라고 해서 optional (내가 원하면 하고 원치 않으면 안해도 되는) 이라고 했는데 나는 15달러 더 내고 신청을 했다. (그게 뭔지도 모르고 일단 신청을 했다). 이미 만료된 이전의 면허증과 새것을 비교해보니 디자인이나 내용 구성에 아무런 차이가 없는데 단 한가지 오른쪽 상단 모서리에 '별'표가 새겨져 있었다. 그 '별'표시가 미 연방정부의 아이디라는 표시로 보인다.
그래서 도대체 이것이 기존의 면허증과 무슨 차이가 있는가 - 이제사 DMV 설명을 읽어보았다. 그러니까 아직까지 별 차이는 없고, 2023년이 되면 기존의 면허증가지고는 미국내에서 국내선 탈 때 사용할수가 없다는 모양이다.

Can I use my current driver's license or ID card to board a domestic flight?
Yes, until May 3, 2023. Your current Virginia credential may be used to board a domestic flight through May 2, 2023. On May 3, 2023, the federal government will require all domestic air travelers to present a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or ID card or another federally approved form of identification.
