What though the radiance which was once so bright

          Be now for ever taken from my sight,

              Though nothing can bring back the hour

          Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;

              We will grieve not, rather find

              Strength in what remains behind;

              In the primal sympathy

              Which having been must ever be;

              In the soothing thoughts that spring

          In years that bring the philosophic mind.



한때 밝았던 광휘가 이제 영원히 내 시야에서 사라져 버린다해도

초원의 빛이여, 꽃의 영광이여, 다시는 그 시간을 돌아킬수 없다해도

슬퍼하지 않으리. 남아있는 것에서 힘을 찾으리니 

태초부터 영원까지 이어질 본래의 동정심으로부터,

인간의 고통으로부터 샘솟는 위안의 상념으로부터

세월속에 무르익는 철학적 이성이 가져오는, 죽음을 통찰하는 믿음으로부터

       The Clouds that gather round the setting sun

          Do take a sober colouring from an eye

          That hath kept watch o'er man's mortality;

          Another race hath been, and other palms are won.

          Thanks to the human heart by which we live,

          Thanks to its tenderness, its joys, and fears,

          To me the meanest flower that blows can give

          Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears.

                                                         

지는 해 주위로 모여드는 구름은

인간의 유한함을 지켜봐 온 눈(태양의 은유)으로부터 음울한 빛으로 물들어간다. 

또 하나의 경주가 끝났고 (죽음을 의미), 종려관(승리의 상징)을 얻었도다.

우리가 의지해 살아가는 이 마음 덕분에

그 부드러움, 흥겨움, 두려움등으로 해서 

흩날리는 하챦은 꽃이라 할지라도, 

너무나 깊은 상념들을 내게 보내노니, 눈물조차 흘릴 수 없어라. 



워즈워드의 시는, 나이를 먹을 수록 그 맛이 깊어진다. 이런 뜻을 내가 스무살에 이해할 수 있었겠는가. 나이를 먹는다는 것도 괜챦은 일이다. 우리에게 워즈워드가 있으니까.
